Leave No Oil Company Behind

Perhaps the reason that they chose to block this ridiculous tax hike is because the oil companies in question would be forced to raise their prices in order to pay out the taxes.

And, please, don't come talking to me about 'record profits,' either. Nobody who works in any business is ever going to pay taxes out of their profits - they're going to raise their prices so as to keep their profits in their pockets.
Happy Birthday! You are OLD!!!
The provision in the bill was not a tax hike. The language in the bill would've eliminated the tax breaks and royalty relief that the oil industry received in the 2005 energy policy act. Before that the majority of those tax breaks didn't exist.

Since then profits have gone up. To use Exxon as an example, here are their approximate annual profits for the years 2002-2006:

2002: $12 Billion
2003: $22 Billion
2004: $25 Billion
2005: $36 Billion
2006: $39 Billion

To be sure-- there's nothing wrong with making profit-- even record profit. But if a company is that successful-- more than tripling their profit in 5 years-- should the American taxpayer really be forgoing royalty payments and subsidizing tax cuts for that company?

Why are we subsidizing the country's most successful and profitable company?
